"With distorted vocals over heavy riffs, these Nashville punks play some mean-ass metallic hardcore. While they nail down their own sound, I think it’s funny how the lyrics refuse to adhere to any style. Lyrically, they start out with a horror punk theme on songs like “Space Wolf” and “The Russian Sleep Experiment” and then abandon that tone for a song about the struggles of an aging punk on “Domestic Punk”(which is a horror of its own when ya think about it). I can’t help but be tickled a bit by this, but it also speaks to Dos Cobros’ lack of pretentiousness when bringing the rock."
- Razorcake

"Whatever you call this, it's imaginative, raw and really rocking."
- Music Street Journal

"Dos Cobros' Synesthesia is a walk through a post punk, metal infused world of insanity and we love it."
- Colorado Punk Rock Army

"This album sounds like a Black Sabbath fever dream. Take this how you will. But that's what it sounds like"
- Issues Magazine 41

"Coming into their own would be an understatement for JD and Josh on this record. They absolutely knocked it out of the park. This is the kind of punk-rock album that will have you binging on bands like Black Flag, Minor Threat and Bad Brains after you have given it a few run throughs. “Synesthesia” captures everything that mainstream “rock and roll” lacks today. It has grit, intensity, rebellion and feel in every song. Not to mention you can listen to the whole thing in less than 30 minutes. What more could you ask for?"
- WKU Herald

I suppose this could be called "heavy metal," but that is only so accurate. A lot of the music here merges the territory between heavy metal and hardcore punk, I suppose making it fit more under metalcore, but even that isn't so tight a fit. At times it leans in one direction more than the other, but that combination is present pretty much throughout this fairly short set. There are other things here, too, including space rock and proggy elements along with some shoegaze. Whatever you call this, it's imaginative, raw and really rocking.

Pounding in super-heavy and fuzz-laden, there is a bit of a punk edge as the opening "Space Wolf" comes out of the gate. The track gets more aligned with a thrashy sort of pure metal sound as it continues, though. It even has some hints of shoegaze at times. This instrumental is a strong opener. The second track bears the title "The Russian Sleep Experiment" with the parenthetical "Orange Soda." It powers in with an early thrash meets NWOBHM sound. The vocals come in with a slightly distorted, but old school metal sound. I can almost make out hints of space rock on this dramatic and powerful tune. As strong as the opener was, this takes it to a new level. Around the two-minute mark it shifts to an almost punk meets thrash approach. This is crazed and tastefully unsettling. The lyrics get a parental advisory. The tune gets crazed and works through a number of changes. There is a full hardcore punk section at later.

Pounding out with a fierce and raw thrash jam, "Kiss the Knife" is on fire. It's another with definite hardcore punk edges to it. This works through some different movements, again having sections that are closer to hardcore. "Domestic Punk" is s fierce stomper that has both metal and hardcore in the mix. In fact, this one probably lands closer to the hardcore end of the spectrum. Then again, with that title would you expect anything else?

Another that lands in the hardcore end of the pool, "You're so Cool" is short and ferocious. Fierce and frantic, metal and punk are merged pretty well on "Pretty Kitty." This is another that's brief. Punk and metal are the driving forces on the short screamer titled "Danger Wank," too.

Noisy and rather experimental, "(To)night Beat" is another that has the combination of metal and punk built into it, but there are other things here, too. Some of the changes are almost prog-like. The cut has a psychedelic edge in some parts, too. This runs almost six-and-a-half minutes, and they make good use of all that space. After the four-minute mark they take it to a weird bit of ambience and then come back in with a dark metal meets space movement. It drifts to trippy space from there to take the set out.

Duo Dos Cobros Coming into their own with “Synesthesia”
The power-punk duo of J.D. Minor and Josh Hines are at it again with their second full-length release “Synesthesia.”
“Synesthesia” is the sequel to “Emulsifier” the first full-length album released by Dos Cobros back in April of 2018. Upon first listening to their most recent release it is easy to see how far the duo has come in such short time.
While “Emulsifier” comes in at just under 19 minutes total with nine songs, “Synesthesia” pounds out eight tracks in a little under 29 minutes, showing the band’s song writing catalog has expanded to fit in more elaborate jams. The production is thicker with higher quality sound and the album overall just flows better.
Similar to the way “Emulsifier” kicked things off, “Synesthesia” opens up with a powerful, consistent drumbeat with unpredictable riffage in “Space Wolf.” This track brings great energy to start off a punk-rock album, and no there are no vocals, it’s a straight instrumental, which is very fitting.
The way “Space Wolf” leads into “The Russian Sleep Experiment” and then “Kiss the Knife” are almost flawless transitions, as if they were meant to be played live in order. The special thing about this duo is they are able to put all of the energy they bring at live shows into a recording, which can really be heard on this album, even more so than “Emulsifier” did.
Halfway through the record is a noticeable transition into a choppier, more groove oriented sound with “Domestic Punk.” Upon listening to this track for the first time my immediate thoughts were, “I want to know the lyrics.”
“Domestic Punk” is an absolute raging, party kind of song that does not let up. Lines like “Get to work, when we can, five minutes early, that’s the plan” and “Do what we want, within reason, we dress appropriate, when in season” are relatable to any punk-rocker and should be remembered.
“Your so Cool” is a very fitting follow up to the previous track. Coming in at under two minutes long this short, fast jam makes for one of the most memorable on the whole album for the simple fact that it includes the lyrics, “Sex, drugs and rock and roll.”
The last three songs on “Synesthesia” are where the album really holds its identity.
“Pretty Kitty” is the most assertive song on the whole record. Sexy riffs compliment sexy lyrics like, “There’s a warmth in her thighs, that makes a big sparkle in my eyes.”
The progressive, airy feel at the end of “Pretty Kitty” leads into “Danger Wank” very nicely. This is the punk tune you are looking for on this album, seriously.
“Danger Wank” is another track that comes in at less than two minutes long and never ceases to let up in its onslaught. Leading into the longest song on the album is a great order for this song to fall in as the album ends.
In a very similar choppy drumbeat style, “(To)night Beat” kicks off a six minute jam-out with a great change of tempo a minute into the song. The stoppage and changing of riffs is aided by excellent drumming, making this the most complete song on the record.
The way the six minute ballad was placed at the end was very effective on this album. The use of different guitar effects and sounds can really be taken in on this final roller coaster of a tune.
Coming into their own would be an understatement for JD and Josh on this record. They absolutely knocked it out of the park.
This is the kind of punk-rock album that will have you binging on bands like Black Flag, Minor Threat and Bad Brains after you have given it a few run throughs.
“Synesthesia” captures everything that mainstream “rock and roll” lacks nowadays. It has grit, intensity, rebellion and feel in every song.
Not to mention you can listen to the whole thing in less than 30 minutes. What more could you ask for?
